Chapter 3

Javier

I leaned forward in my seat, trying to see through the kitchen window, and envisioned Kenny's reaction in my mind. He's gonna be so surprised, I thought, rubbing my hands together.

As I was reaching for my phone to call him, the door opened. I straightened up in my seat, watching my boyfriend practically run for the car.

"Wow, I didn't expect you to be so excited to see me," I said when he climbed into the car.

"Why are you here?" he asked, glancing at the house.

"The last time I checked, we were dating."

I forced a smile and watched how he tied his shoes. He seemed more shocked than pleased, which wasn't exactly the reaction I had expected. Apparently, my boyfriend didn't like surprises.

"Can we start driving?" he said impatiently. "I can feel her watching from the window."

I laughed but backed up and drove off. He looked cute even when he was nervous. I couldn't resist one more surprise, so I turned right off the street and stopped the car.

"The school is not here," he said. "What are you doing?"

"Calm down," I said. I touched his thigh with my hand. "We'll get there on time."

He shook his head and blew a breath out of his mouth.

"I just wish you hadn't come this morning."

Ouch. I felt the sting in my chest and pulled my hand away. I had no clue what was wrong with him. Yesterday, he had purred in my lap, and now the little prince wasn't happy with anything I tried. I had even set my alarm clock to wake up inhumanly early so I had time to drive to the other side of town. Apparently, it had been a mistake.

"What's the problem? Did I do something wrong?"

I crossed my arms and looked away from him. Soon, he touched my arm.

"Look, I'm sorry," he said softly. "It's just, my mom…"

"What does she have to do with anything?"

He blushed but stayed quiet while I stared at him and tried desperately to understand why my boyfriend was acting so weird this morning. It was supposed to be me who wasn't a morning person, not him. An eerie silence filled the car; it was so quiet that I could even hear my own breathing.

"Mom wants me to have a girlfriend," he blurted out, finally.

"What? Are you going straight again?"

My irritation was growing inside me.

"Hell no!"

He faced me and looked me in the eyes. I turned my head away and heard a heavy sigh. Why was the morning suddenly so difficult? I sensed that he wanted to tell me something, but I refused to turn my head. Instead, I took my phone and began browsing my messages.

"Javier?" he said. "Can we just drive to school? Please!"

The neighborhood where he lived was peaceful. Only a few cars had passed us. There was a man dressed in a gray suit who packed brown boxes into the back of his SUV on the opposite side of the street. Soon he left, and we were alone again.

"Let's go."

My voice was emotionless when I raised my hand to start the engine.

"Um, I just wanted you to know…" He sat there like a puppy with a guilty look. "No matter what mom says, I don't like girls."

I lifted my eyebrows.

"No shit, but you're definitely acting weird this morning."

I couldn't help smiling a bit.

We looked at each other, and a small smile began to grow on his face as well. For a fleeting moment, everything was perfect. His blue eyes, nicely styled straw-colored hair, and perfect lips were so beautiful that I felt the familiar stirring in my balls.

Who cares about school? Unable to stop my boner from growing, I leaned closer to him to erase the distance between us. I had been wanting to kiss him all morning.

Unfortunately, he pulled back and the smile vanished from his face as he glanced over his shoulder.

"Um, what if mom sees?"

"I doubt she has x-ray vision," I said, not even trying to hide the disappointment in my voice.

"It's not that…"

"I know," I snapped. "You're afraid your mom will find out. I get that."

"I don't like this either. I wish I could just tell her."

Now there was frustration in his voice. He crossed his hands and looked down at his shoes. As neither of us had anything to say, I started the engine and turned on the radio so music filled the empty space in the car.

I wanted to say something, but wasn't quite sure what. I let the radio play and focused on my thoughts. Based on what Kenny had told me, Ms. Sherman was pretty much the opposite of my mother; independent, strict, even dominating. Maybe it wasn't so easy for him to come out to her.

"Guess what I want more than anything?" he said suddenly.

I glanced at him and waited for him to continue.

"I would like to hold your hand when we go to the movies or the mall… or anywhere."

He touched my hand, which rested on the gear shift.

We continued driving toward school while he rubbed my hand softly, which made it harder and harder for me to be mad at him.

"Me to." I sighed. "I shouldn't…"

"I'll tell her about us," he interrupted me. "Just give me some time, okay."

It was a reasonable request that I could easily agree with. I also made a mental note not to appear at his front yard when his mother was home. I had to find a better way to surprise my boyfriend, and there were plenty of those. I decided to put the events of the morning behind me and parked my car in the high school parking area.

When we got out of the car, he approached me with a cunning look. He put his hands on my hips and moved closer so our faces were only a few inches apart. Then, his right hand wondered to my back and pulled me against his body before planting a passionate kiss on my lips.

"Damn. You're giving me a boner," I whispered in his ear.

"I know."

He winked, and the smile on his face grew broader.

I put one hand in my pocket and offered the other to Kenny, who gladly took hold of it. We began walking toward the school, ignoring all the other students who might stare at us. Based on how our teammates had reacted, two boys dating shouldn't be news to anyone. And it wasn't.

Nobody paid us any attention, except one, and I was soon to find out who he was.
