Chapter 2

Kenny

I stood under the running water and washed my hair. Quickly, my thoughts drifted to my boyfriend and how we had been kissing on his bed the previous evening. The deep brown eyes, the sexy grin, and a memory of Javier's hand rubbing the front of my jeans made me tingle. I was as hard as a rock.

I put more soap in my hand and closed my eyes. It didn't feel as good as his fingers, but with a little effort, I managed to return to the events of the previous day in my dreams. I fast forwarded to the moment when he let me take off his shirt, which covered his muscular chest.

"You're so beautiful," I whispered.

My hand moved faster, and my breathing became heavier.

Soon, his jeans were pulled down, and my fingers slowly approached the bulge in his boxer briefs. If I had hesitated the day before, now in my fantasy, my hand found the prize inside his underwear, and I lost control.

My legs were shaking and I panted heavily when the fireworks started. A satisfied sensation filled my body; the moment would have been perfect if my mother hadn't knocked on the door at the same moment. My heart missed a beat or two when the knob was turned and the door began to open. Quickly, I wrapped the shower curtain around my body, hoping it wouldn't be too transparent.

"Mom, shit, I'm in the shower," I said. "Can you please give me some privacy?"

"Watch your mouth, young man," she said. "And don't use all the hot water."

"Please, mom. Close the door."

After she left, I leaned against the wall, letting my breathing calm down. I tried not to think about what she might have seen or whether she realized what I had been doing. Instead, I finished washing my hair and sneaked to my room to get dressed. I lingered in my bedroom far longer than was necessary, but finally, I went to the kitchen to get some breakfast.

Mom was sitting at the table, reading the newspaper. "There's oatmeal on the stove." She didn't raise her gaze from the paper.

I took a bowl from the cabinet and scooped oatmeal into it. Then I poured myself a glass of milk and sat at the table, avoiding eye contact with my mother. Please don't say anything.

"So," she said, putting away the newspaper.

"This is really good," I said quickly.

I spooned more oatmeal into my mouth and stared at the bowl.

"Have you seen any girls lately?"

She looked at me and took off her glasses. She cleared her throat and was about to say something but didn't. Instead, she stood up and walked to refill her coffee, her heels clicking on the tiled kitchen floor.

"I hope you're not sexually active yet," she said.

I blushed and my chest tightened. I stammered something, but no real words came out of my mouth. All I wanted was to vanish under the table.

"Your father's not here to talk to you about those things." It was the first time in many years she had mentioned my dad. "Kenny, this is important. You're not ready to have a child yet."

It's not likely that Javier and I will have one, I thought. I let out a small groan to acknowledge I had heard what she said.

"I'm sure you'll find a sweet girl soon," she said. "Just remember that you shouldn't rush into bed with her."

"Mom, I don't…"

"But in case you don't listen to my advice," she said, waiting until I turned to look at her, "do you know how to use a condom?"

My face became as red as a fire truck. I stared at the table in front of me.

"I do," I said in a small voice.

She leaned against the counter and sipped her coffee. Her black business skirt hit just below the knee and she had paired it with a white button-down blouse; the kind she wore every day. Her jewelry was the only thing that changed now and then. She worked as a secretary, but to me, she looked and sounded today more like the District Attorney.

"Honey, I just want you to be safe," she said.

"I will," I said, glaring at her.

"And when you find someone special, I want to meet her," she said, and her face softened. "Your girlfriends will always be welcome here."

I sighed and put the last bite of oatmeal in my mouth. I didn't even taste it. I wanted to ask if Javier was welcome in our house too, but there wasn't an easy way to ask it without coming out at the same time. Besides, I was pretty sure I knew the answer; a boyfriend didn't belong in the future my mother had planned for me.

How ironic that the very thing that made me happiest was something I couldn't share with mom. Luckily, it was my senior year in high school. I reminded myself I had to keep up my façade for only a few more months. As soon as I wasn't living in her house my life would finally start.

"I should go now," I said.

I want to see my boyfriend at the lockers before my first class.

The rumble of a car engine nearby caught both our attentions. I glanced out the kitchen window, not sure whether I hoped it was whom I thought it was. My heart stopped mid beat.

Javier's car turned into the driveway.

"Who's that?" she asked.

She pushed the curtain aside to see better.

"A friend of mine," I said, doing my best to stay cool.

"Is he taking you to school?"

That's a damn good question.

"Um, we're going to the mall after school," I said. "With some other friends," I added quickly.

I didn't want to give him time to step out of his car. As fast as I could, I grabbed my backpack and ran out the door, shoes in my hand.
