Everything Will Turn Out Alright

Chapter 3

The next three days were pretty much the same as that first day of school. Me, Vicky and Jason talked in homeroom, walked to class together and ate lunch together. I was so happy at how well Jason and Vicky took to each other, after only a few days it was like the three of us had been friends for years. I learned from that first day though and made an effort never to spend too much time talking to either Jason or Vicky without trying to include the other in the conversation.

I did ask Vicky about his internet information on the second day of school but to my disappointment I learned that his dad was one of those paranoid (read: smart) parents and blocked his computer from using most social networking sites and Instant Messaging software. He did have an email account though and we traded addresses. I also gave him my phone number but he said that he probably wouldn't be able to call much because most nights his dad used the phone for hours. I didn't know why a chief of surgery would need to spend so much time on the phone but what I know about the life of a chief surgeon wouldn't be able to fill, uh......something really small. He did have an Xbox 360 and a Live account though so that more than made up for the lack of phone time, at least to me.

Every night when I got home me and Vicky and Jason would play Xbox 360 online together for several hours. Usually Halo: Reach since it was the only multiplayer game all three of us had but sometimes when it was just me and Vicky or me and Jason we would play other games like Dead Rising 2, Fable 3 or Smackdown vs Raw.

Which brings me to another thing that I found out about Vicky, he's a pro wrestling fan! I hadn't mentioned up until now as it had nothing to do with the story but I've been a wrestling fan since I was 5 years old. I watch every single week without fail, visit wrestling message boards and I even tried an online e-federation once. I tried to get Jason into it but he just kept laughing at how utterly unbelievable it was and I was forced to ban him from ever mentioning wrestling to me again. It apparently takes a sophisticated mind to understand concepts like "suspension of disbelief".

Vicky had no such problem. He only got into wrestling recently but he loved it every bit as much as I did. We talked about it all the time and it soon became a habit for both of us to email each other after every wrestling show with our thoughts and comments. He also very quickly learned not to talk about wrestling in front of Jason and I extended the ban to cover Vicky as well.

The first day back to school fell on a Tuesday this year so we ended up with a short week. That Friday was the only day that week my mom had to drive Vicky home again and I think she was more excited than I was. That scared me. It was very rarely a good thing when my mom took that much interest in my life. Although that could just be the teenager in me talking since I can't seem to think of one example where she actually made my life noticeably worse for any real length of time.

"Hello again Vicky" my mom said when we got in the car. I was in the back with him again, of course.

"Hi Julia" he responded cheerfully. God I wish I could be half as easygoing as he always seemed to be.

"Did you have a good first week at school?"

"Yeah, except we got a quiz in science class. A quiz! After four days of school." he said angrily.

Mom laughed "Well do you think you did well at least?"

"Well, yeah probably, but it's still not right."

"You better have done well" I interjected, "You copied off of me." Science was the one class where we got to sit next to each other.

"Just that one question!" he said indignantly. "You're probably the only person in the entire school besides the science teacher who knows how to classify animals."

"Didn't they teach that in class?" My mom cut in.

"No." We said in unison and laughed nervously. We had started doing that a lot this week for some reason and every time it happened we'd give each other an embarrassed look or a nervous laugh. Jason thought it was hilarious of course.

"Well, it doesn't seem right to test you on something he never taught." mom remarked.

I sighed, "He said it was supposed to be a 'preliminary quiz' so he could judge how much we either already know or remember from last year. The problem is he said our score on the quiz would count as a real grade. It's completely unfair."

"Incredibly unfair." Vicky agreed.

"Utterly unfair." I added.

"Totally unfair." Vicky put forward.

We giggled.

"I agree." my mom said. "But unfortunately you'll run into teachers like that from time to time. The best way to get back at them is to do good despite how unfair they can be towards you kids. Show him that you can take whatever he throws at you."

"That goes without saying." I said

"Yeah, we were gonna do that anyway." Vicky said matter of factly.

Mom laughed.

We pulled into Vicky's driveway soon after that. He started to get out of the car but my mom stopped him.

"Vicky," she said "How would you like to come over to Nate's house this weekend?" My eyes instantly became as wide as saucers. Did my mom just become the second most awesome person in the world or was I hallucinating?

"Yeah! I'd love too!" Vicky shouted happily.

"Great!" my mom said "How about Saturday?"

Vicky's face fell. "Oh, well, my dad works on Saturday so I can't get a ride...." he trailed off.

"I can pick you up if that's ok with him." Mom offered.

Vicky perked up. "That would be awesome!" He grinned at me. I was already smiling so much my face was starting to hurt. I wanted to dance, I wanted to sing! (despite my complete lack of ability at both) I was going to have Vicky all to myself at my house tomorrow! I don't think it would have been possible for my body to contain any more happiness. I wanted to ask him over so many times this week but each time I chickened out. Now my mom, who up until now seemed to treat my friends with the same cautious distrust she showed everybody else, made up for my lack of a spine.

"Have your father call me tonight if he says it's ok, Vicky." my mom said.

"I'm sure it'll be fine. I'll ask him when he gets home tonight." Vicky was still grinning. It was obvious he was excited as I was but was it excitement because he was going to be spending time with his new friend or excitement because he was going to be spending time with someone who he had feelings for? I couldn't tell.

Vicky said goodbye to me and my mom and ran into his house. I scrambled into the front seat as my mom backed the car out of the driveway and drove towards home.

"So, how many times?" she asked.

"Huh?" I said, confused.

She rolled her eyes. "How many times did you almost ask him over?"

How the hell could she know that? The backseat thing I could get but this? There's no way she could have known what I was thinking.

"I dunno, a lot, but how did you know I didn't ask him?"

"Easy, if you had asked him then I wouldn't have had to."

I guess parents can be smart asses too. "Yeah, but how did you know I wanted to ask in the first place?"

She laughed. "I'm a mother, I can read your mind."

I sighed and rolled my eyes. That was, of course, impossible....but on the other hand I think we've established that even though I may be smart but there are still a lot of things that I don't fully understand. I was pretty sure mind reading was impossible but just to be on the safe side I decided to limit my erotic thoughts while my mom was around. Precautions never hurt anybody right?

Precautions also don't last very long apparently because I spent most of the ride back fantasizing about tomorrow with Vicky. I was excited, an entire day alone with the object of my love and sexual desire how could I not be, but I was also nervous. Up until now I had been lucky. Events have fallen into place perfectly to give me time with Vicky but so far I hadn't really taken advantage of it the way I should have. I made a promise to myself in the car that no matter what I would let Vicky know how I felt tomorrow. I just didn't have any idea how I was going to do that.

It took a little longer to get home from Vicky's than last time because there was more traffic so I had a good thirty five minutes to think up the best way to tell Vicky that I was in love with him. I vetoed telling him outright, I didn't want to spring it on him the second he walked through the door. If the worst happened and he didn't share my feelings I didn't want him to think that the only reason I became friends with him was to get some. If he didn't return my love, or if everyone I knew seriously misjudged and he wasn't even gay, I still wanted to be friends with him.

It was better than not having him in my life at all.

That still left me with the dilemma of how to tell him. This would have been so much easier if he was a girl. At least then I wouldn't have to worry about weather he was attracted to boys or not. In the end I decided I'd just wait and see if any opportunities presented themselves. If it came down to it and I was too much of a coward there was always the chance that my mom would get fed up with my spineless ways and just tell him for me. Although I don't think I'd ever be able to live that down so I was kind of hoping that didn't happen.

We got home and I went straight up to my room and onto Xbox Live. Jason wasn't on but Vicky was so I started writing a quick message asking him if he wanted to play anything when I got an invitation to a private chat from him. I looked around for my headset (damn thing is never where I leave it) found it, plugged it in and accepted his invite.

"Hi." he said quietly when I entered the room.

"Hi yourself," I said. "What's up?"

"Not much. Just waiting for my dad to get home." he said. Did he sound nervous? Or was he trying to keep his voice down? He didn't have any brothers or sisters who he might annoy by talking loud but I seem to remember something about a housekeeper.

"I hope he gets home soon. And says yes of course." I chuckled.

"I know he'll say yes. He's really anxious for me to make friends."

There was something in the way he was speaking that was a little off. It was kind of like he was being very careful about what he was saying. There were even a few times where he would hesitate slightly, as if he changed what he was going to say at the last second. It was starting to worry me.

"Hey, are you ok? You don't seem, well, you." I asked

"Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little nervous I guess." he answered

"About what?"

"Well...you're the first, friend I've made here and I want to hang out with you a lot but I don't want to seem clingy or anything. If you don't want me to come over that's ok."

"Hey, where is all this coming from? I'm just as excited as you were why would you think that I didn't want you to come over?"

"Well....." he hesitated "Your mom was the one who asked, not you..."

Oh crap. I had to think very fast. I needed a plausible excuse (read: lie) that didn't sound like an excuse and didn't take too long to come up with so it wouldn't sound like I frantically made something up in a panic. I couldn't tell him that my mom asked because I was too much of a coward to ask him over, that would beg the obvious question of why was I nervous about inviting a friend over to my house and there was no way I could think up a good excuse for that. I decided on a half truth.

"I was planning on inviting you over but I got so wrapped up in school and playing games with you and Jason that I kinda forgot." I said in what I hoped was a contrite and embarrassed tone. "My mom knew I was going to invite you over but I never said anything about it to her after I asked her if it was ok so she figured that I forgot and invited you over herself." At the same time I was hoping he would believe me I also made a solemn vow that this was the last time I'd ever lie to him.

"So, what you're trying to say is....." he trailed off. My heart pounded in my chest. "...it's all Jason's fault?" he finished in a mischievous tone.

I laughed and only partly with relief. "Yep. It's all his fault, we spent to much time carrying his ass through Reach MP that I forgot to invite you over." We both giggled. To be fair to Jason he was just as good, if not better, at Reach as me and Vicky but you would never get me to admit that even under a medieval torture device worse than day one homework.

"So when does your dad usually get home?" I asked.

"Um, at night?" he said and let out a slight laugh. "He never comes home at the same time every day but he usually makes it for dinner on the weekend so he should be home in a few hours."

"Cool. Wanna play something to pass the time?"

"Sure, let's try to finish Fable 3." he said and I went to go put in the disc.

We played for about three hours then my mom came home and kicked me off the game. She said that I had to do all my homework before she would leave to pick Vicky up tomorrow. There is nothing worse than a parent with 100% foolproof leverage over you and you would think that she could have told me this before she left so I wouldn't have to scramble to finish it before bed. Luckily I didn't get much this weekend. I just had to read a few chapters and do a few worksheets and I got that all done in a little over an hour. I was going to go back on the 360 to see if Vicky was still on when my phone rang. I kinda wanted to ignore it but it had to be Jason and if I didn't answer and he signed on and saw me playing with Vicky he might get the idea that I was ignoring him. I still felt bad enough about the last time I did that so I picked up.

"Hey."

"Why hello there little Nate." Jason said cheerfully.

"What do you want?" I said irritably.

"Do I need a reason to call up my best friend? Can't I just call to say hi?" he asked in a suspiciously innocent tone.

I sighed. "Yes, you do."

"Well, ok, maybe I just want my best friend to show some concern and ask me how my day went, ever think of that?"

"Oh God, ok I might as well get this over with," I sighed again. "How was your day?" I asked with forced cheerfulness.

"It was pretty good. I was on a date." he was brimming with happiness.

"A date?" I asked, slightly confused.

"Yes."

"With, like, a human female?"

"Shut up smurf." he snapped. "But yes, with a human female, and not just any human female but Jenny Winters." he said proudly.

Wow, that was actually kind of a big deal for Jason. He'd had a crush on her since last year but, like someone else who shall pointlessly remain nameless, he never had the guts to ask her out. To tell the truth I was kind of annoyed that made his move before I made mine.

"So you finally asked her out?" Might as well get the dagger twist over with quickly.

He hesitated. "Well, actually no. She uh, kinda asked me."

I grinned. "Well well well Mr Suave I guess it's a little too early for you to switch to vodka martinis."

"What?" he asked. Some people wouldn't recognize a movie reference if it tied them to a table and turned on a slow moving laser.

"Nevermind. So, where did you go?"

"We went to the movies."

"And you didn't take me? I'm crushed, I thought you loved me." I said melodramatically.

"Well if I have to choose between sitting in the dark next to the hottest girl in school or sitting next to you while you spill popcorn all over me guess which one I'm going to pick?"

I laughed. I was genuinely happy for him but he was my best friend so I felt obligated to harass him about this as much as possible.

"I thought you liked when I spilled popcorn on you." Then I added in a sexy whisper "I thought that was our special thing."

He groaned. "Even for a homosexual you can be pretty damn gay sometimes you know that?"

I laughed again. "Well that is kinda the point and speaking of points how far did you get with her?"

"A gentleman never tells." he said haughtily.

"So you didn't get anywhere." I stated.

"No! I kissed her goodnight." he said quickly.

Well, now I was back to being kind of annoyed. He got his first kiss before me? Of course, seeing as I'm the only gay guy that I know of in the entire town, I always expected he'd get to do things like have his first kiss before me but now that Vicky was coming over it kinda bothered me. It was like thinking I was going to come up from behind to win the triple crown in a stunning upset but at the last second the sure thing left me eating his dust. I must have made some kind of noise or something because Jason suddenly became uncharacteristic conciliatory.

"Don't worry dude, I'm sure you'll be kissing Vicky soon enough." he said.

That perked me up because I remembered that I still hadn't told him my news. "Well, Vicky IS coming over tomorrow." I said

"Wow, I can't believe you actually got the balls to ask him." he said wonderingly.

Crap. Well, he was truthful with me so I couldn't just lie to him. "Well, actually, my mom kinda invited him over."

Silence. And then. "Wait, your MOM asked him out on a date FOR you?" He fell into a fit of uncontrollable laughter. I kept a sullen silence until he finally pulled himself together.

"She didn't ask him out on a 'date' for me. She just invited him over. You come over all the time and it's not a 'date'." I said angrily.

"Yeah but you aren't hopelessly in love with me either and I'm assuming your mom does know how you feel about him so, yeah, it's pretty much a date. A date set up by your mom." He started laughing again.

"You know, for somebody who's supposed to be my best friend you seem to take a lot of pleasure in embarrassing me." I said accusingly. I was starting to get a bit hurt and he must of heard that in my voice because he stopped laughing.

"I'm sorry, ok? I'm glad you gonna spend time with Vicky and to be honest it's kinda cool that your mom would do that for you." he said seriously.

"It's alright, I forgive you." I said, feeling better. "This time. But only because I know how upset you're gonna be when I lose my virginity before you."

He laughed. "That's only because you're probably gonna jump on the poor kid when he walks in the door. I'm planning on taking things just a bit slower with Jen."

"You mean she's planning on taking things slower with you."

"Yeah, but I don't mind really. I'd probably never admit this to anybody else but I kinda want my first time to be romantic, you know? Not just some quickie in a dark corner somewhere."

"Yeah, to be honest I want the same thing."

"Wow, I guess love does tame the wild perv."

I giggled. "Don't worry, I'm still a pervert at heart."

He laughed and started to say something when I heard a muffled shout over the phone.

"My mom's kicking me off the phone." he said. "I'll talk to you later. Be sure to tell me how things went with Smurfette, ok?" I hated when he called Vicky that but if I said anything he'd just do it more so I ignored it.

"I will. See ya."

"Bye." He hung up.

I looked at the clock and saw that we had been talking for almost an hour. I didn't feel like playing any video games so decided to pass the time until Vicky's dad called by reading a book. Yeah, I like reading, so what?

I read for about two hours before I heard the downstairs phone ring. I shot out of bed ran into the hallway. This had to be Vicky's dad. I waited in the hallway for my mom to call me and tell me the (hopefully) good news but she never did. I waited. Two minutes. Three minutes. Five. Ten. I heard my mom laughing. I sighed and went back to my room. Who the hell would call to have a conversation with my mom this late at night? We had call waiting, so I wasn't worried about her missing the call, I was just disappointed that it hadn't come yet. And, yes, maybe I was a little bit worried. Vicky seemed sure that his dad would have no problem with it but in case you hadn't already noticed I tend to be a bit pessimistic. I couldn't concentrate on my book so I decided to mess around on the internet when I saw that my Yahoo toolbar was showing that I had one new email. It was from Vicky. I opened it and read.

Hey, just letting you know that my dad said it was ok (!!!) you can pick me up anytime after 10. your mom will probably tell you when they get off the phone but my dad doesnt sound like hes hanging up anytime soon. hes even telling her his lame jokes. i feel bad for her, lol. ill see you tomorrow. cant wait! Vicky.

I responded.

Hey, that's awesome! Not the parents talking part but the you coming over part. My mom keeps laughing so I guess she's into lame jokes. I can't wait for tomorrow either, see you at 10:01! XD

Nate.

I was bouncing up and down in my chair, Vicky was coming over tomorrow! I was excited, no I wasn't that's too tame, I was ecstatic, I was thrilled, I was in heaven! I also had no idea how the hell I was ever going to get to sleep tonight. I was more excited than I get on Christmas Eve but then again I've never been expecting a better present than alone time with Vicky. Even though I knew I'd have a hard time getting to sleep I wanted to get in bed right away on the completely irrational grounds that if I turned off the lights and closed my eyes tomorrow would somehow get here faster.

I wanted to wait for my mom to get off the phone before I did anything though. I knew the second she gets off the phone she's going to come tell me the, now guaranteed, good news so I didn't want to run the risk of actually falling asleep only to be woken up and have to attempt to fall asleep again. I went with my original plan and messed around on a few internet message boards until I heard my mom walking up the stairs.

I quickly finished my post (I completely owned this idiot who insisted that Obi-Wan Kenobi wasn't actually in all six Star Wars movies because he died in A New Hope. Seriously! Did he ever actually watch Star Wars?) and shut down my computer as my mom knocked on my door. I invited her in and in she came.

"I just got off the phone with-"

"I know," I interrupted. "Vicky's dad and he said that we can pick him up anytime after 10 tomorrow so I figured that you can get me up a little after 9 so I have enough time to shower and get ready ok?"

She seemed unsure how to respond. Ah, it was a wonderful thing being one step ahead of her for once. I would treasure this moment always. "Were you listening in?" she asked, not quite believing it but apparently thinking that was the only way I could have known.

"No, Vicky sent me an email telling me all about it when you guys decided to stay on the phone for 6 hours." Slight exaggeration.

"Kids these days are so impatient." she sighed. "But yes I'll be sure to get you up so you'll have plenty of time to get ready. Goodnight Nathan." She turned to leave.

"Mom, wait." I said.

She turned around and looked at me expectantly.

"Thanks. For inviting Vicky over I mean. I probably never would have had the courage to do it myself, so, thanks." I said grudgingly.

She smiled happily at me. "You don't need to thank me, that's what mothers are for, helping their sons out when they need it." She turned to leave and I stopped her again.

"One more thing, um, despite what I just said no matter what happens, or doesn't, tomorrow please don't say anything to Vicky about, you know, that I like him or anything, ok?"

She laughed. "Don't worry kiddo, you're on your own with that one."

I smiled. "Thanks, goodnight mom."

"Goodnight."

Well, now that that potential crisis was averted, I could attempt sleep. I got undressed and lay down naked on my bed. I wasn't really in the mood but I figured jerking off would help get me tired so I started stroking myself. I thought about Vicky that day at the pool and that tantalizing glimpse I got of his ass and, in the mood or not, that pretty quickly brought me to orgasm. I came all over my stomach and spent the next few minutes scooping it up and licking it off my fingers. After I was done I lay there for a few more minutes enjoying the sensation of the freshly washed blanket on my naked body. Sometimes I like to sleep naked, having soft sheets and blankets envelope your exposed flesh is one of the truly great feelings I think. Sadly, I knew my mom was going to wake me up tomorrow so sleeping nude was out of the question. I reluctantly got my pajamas on, read for a bit until I felt my eyelids drooping and then went to sleep.
