Untitled again

It started as a dream would start,
            uncertain,
a shadowed face unknown, a smile
            ambiguous,
a jest enjoyed, suggestive, plied
            with meanings,
and went on with laughter, playing,
            as dreams will,
on cords too deep to hear, but oh!
            to feel
vibrate beneath the heart and wake,
            as dreams do,
inchoate hopes long thought laid to rest.

They woke, I woke, and saw in shadows
            shining
like a pearl on dark brown velvet
            a word
set in our talk as an offering,
            a stone
to trample on or cherish. As dreams
            are wont,
the landscape shifted, shadows grew
            solid
as flesh, soft as hard flesh, darkness
            to hold
and be held by, the wordless word
            of senses
making sense at last, and in time
            transmuting
torsion, tension, the leaden moment
            of suspense,
to searing sharing. I woke again
            alone,
our mingled musk shadowing the air
            like regret.
