Adam Conquers Earth

By Chris James

Chapter Thirteen

Alan looked up at the boys sitting in the booth of the restaurant, and then over at Frank behind the camera in the corner. The monitor showed him the camera's view of the people walking along the sidewalk across the street. "Action," Alan said.

The camera view pulled back revealing the front window of the Hamburger Hut, the words in reverse on the glass. And then it pulled back even more until the two boys were seen in a wide angle sitting at a table on the red leatherette seats. Steve is chewing as Adam pushes the remaining French fries around on his plate.

Steve swallows and nods. "I understand why you're confused, I just don't get Beverly. Does she feel like she owns you?"

Adam shrugs. "I don't understand girls. Can't I kiss one without being owned?"

"Apparently not. Andrea told Denise that Beverly said she's crazy about you. One minute they're all gaga about Zac Efron and the next it's you. I suppose that's progress, at least you're real."

"I am not... Damn," Mark said.

"Cut," Alan yelled. "Take five."

He got up and walked over to the booth. "Its okay, Mark...it's only a line error."

"I'm sorry, Alan...I know the line."

"You want to stop for now?" Alan asked.

"No, we're a day behind already and that's my fault," Mark said.

"Mark, there is no fault...you had personal reasons." Alan placed a hand on Mark's shoulder. "We'll go on when you're ready," He said, and then walked back to the crew.

Mark looked up and saw the worry in Steve's eyes. "Are you all right?" Steve asked.

"Yeah...it's just on my mind, you know?"

His mother's funeral had turned into a media circus. His private moment with family and friends at the grave site was shattered by photographers who leapt out of their cars and ran towards the small gathering. Tim and Tommy herded them away none too gently but they still took photos.

The tabloid photos appeared two days later accompanied by the speculation that Mark's mother had been in a mental institurion and had committed suicide. And worse, the paper made the suggestion that her now wealthy son had ignored her all his life. It brought more unnecessary grief into an already sad situation.

The photos of the boy in his private moment of grief had brought forth an outpouring of fan sympathy, which quickly turned into hatred towards the tabloid. Their office had been ransacked, and equipment smashed, all just as senseless as the initial exposé itself.

Triton held a news conference which Mark did not attend. But the grim faced executives left no doubt that the tabloid had been completely wrong and that Mark had nothing to do with the response of the fans. The moment ended with a plea for people to just leave Mark alone and give him time to heal.

Brian and Rosie had taken the boy to see his mother in her last moments. The image was grim and Mark had clung to Brian's hand for strength. Her body was wasted away, her features shrunken and lifeless. And yet Mark called her mother and kissed her cheek before he cried. She died two days later. Mark sat quietly at home with Brian by his side as they waited for the funeral arrangements.

The return to shooting was delayed by only a day, but Alan gave the whole company some time off. Without Mark's presence no one would have been able to focus, the boy was in mourning and that had to be respected. But Mark didn't forget that his mother was Rosie's sister, and her loss was just as deeply felt. They comforted one another and agreed, it was time to move on.

"I can't be Zac Efron for her, Beverly needs to grow up," Adam says as they resume filming.

"I think girls are alien creatures," Steve says.

Adam smiles. "And what do you know about aliens, you think they exist?"

Steve nods. "My uncle was abducted by aliens." He looks around to make sure no one is listening. "He says they probed him."

Adam laughs and shakes his head. "I think that's crazy, your uncle is just joking."

"I don't know about that, he's a changed person. I mean all he listens to now are the Village People."

Adam and Steve get up and clear their trash off the table before making their way towards the door.

"Cut," Alan said once Adam placed a hand on the door.

The crew moved the equipment outside to the parking lot while Tina thanked the restaurant manager and Mark shook hands with the employees. They relocated the scene to a quiet tree lined avenue where the boys could be seen walking home. Brian and Alan followed along in the street.

Mitch held the Steadicam while Frank held his waist, and they walked backwards, shooting the boys walking along. "Rolling," Mitch said, and Adam went into his lines.

"How's a boy supposed to understand what girls want, isn't there some kind of instruction manual?"

"Yeah, that would make life easier...of course there isn't. I guess we're just supposed to fumble around until we figure it out. My dad says men don't understand women either, so I guess it doesn't always work," Steve says.

"Maybe I should just forget girls," Adam says. "I have a dog, she loves me."

Steve laughs. "It's not the same, I assure you. I just...well, I don't understand you half the time, Adam."

"Don't feel bad, I don't always understand me either. I feel like an alien on this planet."

Steve thinks about that as they walk a little further. "Do you sometimes feel that everyone around you is a stranger?"

"All the time," Adam says. "But I made the choice and I'm stuck with it."

"Stuck with what?"

"Joining the human race. I don't know what I expected it to be like, I just lack information all the time, and that's not good."

"We go to school, that's information," Steve says.

Adam stops on the sidewalk and looks at Steve. They are now standing under the scaffold rigged up by the gaffers with eight strong lights aimed on the spot where they stand. Adam delivers the next line. "I don't know where to begin, Steve...but I have to tell you something. Maybe I just better show you..."

And with that Adam places a hand on Steve's shoulder. The scene would be transformed in the studio at a later date. The boys are standing in a pool of light, the world around them fading, and Steve has this look of wonder on his face. In any other context their expressions would have been sensual as they gaze at one another. But Adam would be giving Steve a mental view of his home world...Regalia.

An expensive special effect would be inserted here, the audience shown the image Steve was supposed to see. A green sky, brown rolling hills and a vast expanse of sand. The stubby trees were covered in red and yellow leaves, and in the background stood a large reptilian creature. Regalia...the television audiences first look at Adam's home world. Alan had the effects team working on it 24/7 since this was going to be a moment of incredible revelation for the viewers.

The moment ends and Steve sits down on the sidewalk with a thump, the shock evident on his face. Adam smiles and takes a seat beside him.

"What was that?" Steve asks. "I saw...I saw you in some strange place with...with, what was that?"

"My home world, Steve...I'm not a human."

"Yes...you're a Regalian. But how do I know that?" Steve says.

"I put it in your mind, just like I made you think I was your friend when we first met," Adam replies.

"You...you aren't my best friend?" Steve asks. "Is this all a lie?"

"No, Steve...you are my best friend, I never had a friend quite like you. I came to this planet for the fun of it, and now I'm stuck here," Adam says.

"I...I don't know what to think...you're an alien?"

"I am, but you're not afraid of me, are you?" Adam asks. "I'm just like you, Steve. I was just born somewhere else."

"Wow, this is all so strange...I never thought..."

"Steve, I only told you because you can keep the secret. You can't tell anyone," Adam says.

"No, I can't tell...who would I tell? No one would believe me," Steve says. "They laugh at my uncle...Hey, that wasn't you, was it?"

"No, what he said was silly. I came here to see Earth because I wanted to experience what makes you human."

"And you can't go home?" Steve asks.

"I wrecked the space car, I'm stuck...my Dad is gonna be so mad when he finds out..."

"So they'll come looking for you, your parents?"

"Eventually, if they can find me," Adam says.

"I don't understand, I know an alien and it doesn't freak me out."

"I...well, I have something else to tell you, Steve...I can control your mind."

"How...how can you do that?"

Adam sighs. "A long time ago...a very long time ago, we were human too. We have the same ancestry, that's why we look alike. It's just that my people are millions of years older than yours. We evolved while you humans didn't change much beyond what you are now. Every school boy in Regalia knows the story, but no one really knew the facts about you, and that's why I'm here."

"You have super powers, like Superman..." Steve begins to say.

"No, that's a fantasy," Adam laughs. "Our bodies are like yours, our minds are something different. We develop telepathy before we can talk and we can bend the laws of physics with our minds. It was necessary for Regalians to survive on a hostile planet."

"I saw...wow, what were those images you put in my head?"

"The Sand Sea, which was the home of the Narts before we tamed them. That scale covered beast you saw, those are Narts...they can be very dangerous, but we control them now."

Steve nods. "I just thought it was some strange kind of fish."

Adam sighs. "Steve, it's going to be a long time before you understand what a Regalian can do, or what my life was like back there. Your solar system is in the Forbidden Zone, I'm not supposed to be here. We're not supposed to be in contact with humans yet, maybe not ever."

"You aren't leaving, are you?" Steve asks.

"No, Steve, I have no way home."

Steve slowly nods and places a hand on Adam's arm. "It's okay, you're welcome here."

"Cut," Alan said. "That was beautiful."

Mark smiled. "Good job, Steve."

The vans pulled up and the equipment was loaded. Mark and Steve climbed in the limo and sprawled out in back. It had been a long first day for this episode. Brian watched the boys relax as they rode back to the studio lot to drop Steve off. Tim was there waiting as the limo pulled up.

"Thanks guys," Steve said. And then he leaned over and gave Mark a kiss on the cheek. "Bye, alien buddy."

"Good night," Mark smiled as the boy got out.

"Home, James," Brian said and he scooted over next to Mark.

"I wish I could drink," Mark said.

"I know, will you settle for a hot bath and a back rub?" Brian asked.

"Yeah, that really sounds good."

It had been only three days since Mary Anne had been buried. Brian was surprised that Mark had snapped back so quickly. But there had been those few moments today when the boy's mind wandered, it was to be expected. Alan was very understanding, the crew quiet and efficient during the shooting. It was as if they were holding their collective breath and wondering if the old Mark would bounce back. Brian knew he would, it would just take time.

Rosie fed them a simple meal, lean pork chops with apple sauce, Mark's favorite. But after the meal Mark gathered up his running gear and Rosie kissed him good night. He was spending the night at Brian's more and more, but she understood the need. Sleeping in the arms of someone he loved would heal the boy's pain faster than anything she could devise.

Mark ran the tub as Brian turned on the shower. A quick wash and then they could soak in the tub, the closest thing they could arrange to a Japanese bath. Brian's tub was large, big enough for the two of them to lie beside one another. The hot water was delightful, but not as much as Brian's presence beside him.

The heat did wonders, but the massage finished Mark off. The soft sweet smell of lavender permeated the bedroom as Brian rubbed the scented oil into Mark's skin. He could feel the boy melt beneath his fingers, this would not be a night for sex play...this was therapy.

The definition of Mark's body had changed dramatically in the past six months, muscle replacing the lean tissue in his arms and legs. Even stretched out on his stomach like this Brian could see the signs left by a new and healthy lifestyle. Mark's body seemed to crave the exercises they did. He ate better, slept better and moved like a lean, sleek cat these days.

But the boy's mind craved more and more attention, and Brian felt the responsibility. If only to be able to spend the rest of his life looking down at these slender hips and that well rounded bottom Brian knew he would give it his all.

There were fleeting moments when his hands wanted to stop the massage and turn his touch into a caress. The curve of that beautiful hip, the long smooth flow of thigh muscle...all these things tempted his current objective, but Brian deferred the thoughts.

They would run in the morning and shower, then he could lay down for pleasure with this wonderful body and possess the strength he now felt beneath his fingertips. Mark was an animal in the morning and those moments of love driven by passion carried them well into the workday. Now the boy needed to relax and sleep, for when the sun rose they would paw at one another like two lions in heat.

Slowly Brian eased off his massage since Mark was already off in a state of oblivion. The body seemed limp as Brian eased the towel out from under the boy and pulled the covers in place. He went in the bathroom to wash his hands and looked up in the mirror, the worry lines were back on his face.

There were so many things on his mind now; the show presented quite a challenge. His contract with Triton had been established and his salary had seen an incredible jump. So much, in fact, that Brian told Rosie to terminate their deal, it seemed like a conflict of interest to take money from both sources.

Mark Harrison Enterprises had been created by Todd Mason. The limited corporation had been formed to deal with Mark's charitable contributions and to invest for the boy's future. It came as no surprise when Mark's income went from six figures to seven, but the boy insisted he wanted to donate.

They were all children's causes, and medical research was foremost on Mark's mind. For among the many childhood diseases out there was the one that had taken first his brother, and now his mother's life. There was no fanfare; it was all done quietly and privately. The laws of California governing child actors required a certain percentage be put away, and that left the rest.

And the rest was a lot considering Mark's simple needs. It was Tim that suggested they might pool their resources, and for a very good reason. By the second month of that second season Tim had installed gates across the end of Rosie's driveway, they had become necessary. Fans knew where Mark lived, the address had been posted on the internet and now the house had a round the clock security presence.

The neighborhood being what it was didn't mind having Mark there, but they objected to the increased traffic flow. It would only get worse Tim assured them, Rosie knew it was time to move. Not that she wanted to live in some huge gated compound amidst other stars of film and television, but it seemed like that was where she was headed. And then Tim invited them all to his house for dinner after they got back from Japan.

Rosie was charmed by the dinner and astounded by the view. Todd didn't live too far away and she felt secure in their developing relationship, it was time to do something for Mark. Her quiet suggestion to Brian was quickly followed up by a meeting of the minds, the first time Tim and Brian had sat down with Rosie and Todd.

Tim emphasized the need for Mark's security and Todd said they ought to look for a house or land upon which to build one. The hills were dotted with estates, but land was scarce, the former seemed like a better idea. They came up with a list of realtors and the search began, all without Mark's having a clue about what they were doing.

The first several places they saw were inadequate, too old, too small or just plain too weird. This was California and people often built to their own absurd notion of what was trendy or necessary. Some homes were nice but required a huge staff of housekeepers and gardeners, but they kept after it. Mulholland Drive, Laurel Canyon, Coldwater Canyon...the famous names filled the list of places above Hollywood and Beverly Hills, there had to be something.

Rosie and Tim spent more time looking while Brian was at work and Todd was busy with contract renewal season. They stopped at a little bistro for lunch before meeting yet another agent to look at a house.

"Seven acres and a view, she told me," Tim said. "I hope it's not all grass like that last one."

"I prefer a more natural setting, trees would be nice," Rosie said.

"It's on a dead end street, I like that."

Rosie smiled. "Just as long as it's not perched on a cliff and about to relocate in the valley during the next trembler."

Tim laughed. "Yeah, we have seen a few of those."

A real estate lady named Constance met them at the bistro and they rode in her Mercedes up towards Mulholland.

"I think you'll like this one, it has privacy without being off some dirt road in the canyon," She said.

"And who lives there now?" Rosie asked.

"The family is in Paris at the moment, but his business is going international, they're relocating to London next month."

"Your description says large swimming pool, how big, do you know?" Tim asked.

"Yes, it's not your ordinary backyard pool. Mr. Jack's son is now a nationally recognized swimmer. He built a full sized pool, twenty five yards long I believe, just for the boy to practice in, but it's only twenty feet wide. It fits into the gardens very nicely and there's a wide spacious deck that goes right into the trees."

"I hope there's a nice view," Rosie said.

"Yes ma'am, there sure is...okay, here's the street," Constance said.

Tim looked up at the street sign on the corner, and then smiled. Isherwood Lane the sign read, how appropriate that Mark might be living here. Brian would understand the reference to the great twentieth century gay author, maybe it was an omen?

The homes along the street were sheltered and tucked away, some had gates and others just a huge thick hedge to hide the property. Rosie could see the end of the street, a metal barrier backed by bushes. Constance pulled into the driveway and stopped before an imposing set of gates. She shut down the engine and turned to look at Rosie in the back seat.

"We walk from here. I think that's the best way for you to get the flavor of the house."

The gate across the drive was sturdy looking, but Constance led them up a short walkway to a small doorway. She produced a key and let them in. The walkway inside was covered, lacquered natural wood posts held up a curved tile roof that ran all the way to the side of the house through a grove of bamboo. Another walkway intersected and led over towards the driveway.

Constance led them across the tangent and into the driveway so they could see the four garage door openings. The surface of the driveway was concrete and big enough for a half court of basketball. They followed her around to a gate on the side and through it into the yard. The trees began here, surrounded by flowering bushes and mulched beds. A flagstone walkway led downwards towards the rear, and they walked beside the house for almost a hundred feet before they came out onto the lawn.

Here the house ended, and so did the trees on this side. That left only the pool, a small amount of grass surrounding the deck and the view...a spectacular view. They were high enough to look over the houses below on another street. The land was terraced and planted all the way down the slope to a dense growth of trees.

"The property ends beyond the trees, but there's a security fence and then the neighbor's wall, I don't think anyone can get up here that way," Constance said. "This section of the neighborhood is built on solid bedrock, there hasn't been any ground movement whatsoever, so don't let the height fool you. Solid rock, in fact they had to blast a trench for the pool."

And what a pool, Tim was impressed. A long stretch of water and yet only the two ends were parallel, the sides were curved. He could see that a swimmer would be able to do laps if he stayed in the middle, a clever use of the space. There was a teak gazebo spanning the middle of the pool that led from the deck beside the house to the fish pond on the other side.

They walked the far side of the deck to the pond and then turned to look at the house. The rear was dominated by a large screened porch and a sunroom, the windows opaque now to keep out the hot summer sun. Tim could almost see a hundred people filling the space for a party. And at the far end of the pool deck was a brick patio and six glass topped tables beside the huge outdoor barbecue. The Jack family must have done a lot of entertaining here.

The house was stone and redwood, with long glass windows across the upper floor that looked out on the view. With this kind of sloping land it meant that second floor would actually be the first floor entered from the front of the house. The place must have a large basement area. Constance led them to a side door and unlocked it.

"This will knock your socks off," Constance said, and she was right.

The sunroom was a jungle of delicate plants. Dozens of orchids and other flowering plants filled the air with a wonderful scent. The sounds of trickling water led them to the far end where there was a small waterfall feeding an indoor pond filled with colorful fish.

"The water comes from a well, and Mr. Jack said it's never dried up," Constance said. "This is all pretty spectacular and I imagine he'll leave it here if you want, they can't take it with them."

The basement area was huge but the far wall was part of the bedrock and the rest was occupied with a huge model railroad and two pool tables. A bar was built-in on one wall. Yes, it seems the Jack family was a partying bunch.

The upstairs was comfortable and spacious, but Constance led them straight to the kitchen, instinctively knowing a woman like Rosie would want to see that first. A long row of windows looked out over the yard, and the glass fronted cabinets gave the room a spacious feeling. Two stoves, two ovens, a huge refrigerator and pantry, all accompanied by stone topped counters and a beautiful tile floor.

One end of the room was the breakfast nook, more glass and seating for eight. There was a hallway leading towards the front and a bathroom close at hand.

"What's down this way?" Tim asked.

"This leads to the front of the house and the mother-in-law apartment," Constance said. "Their son lives there now." They found themselves in a small lobby at the front of the house. Several doors and a staircase. "That door leads to the garage," Constance explained. "This one is what you might consider the front door, this double one opens up into the living room and these stairs lead to the apartment which sits over the garage," She said.

Tim was dying to see how a high caliber swimmer lived and he eagerly followed Constance into the boy's private lair. The living room was like a sportsman's paradise. A large screen television, gaming systems and a kayak hung on the wall. Two bedrooms, one used as a den and study room, the other filled with a king sized bed. A large tiled bathroom and a kitchenette completed the rooms.

Tim followed them back towards the front door and paused to look at a gallery of photos on the wall. The Jack's boy was a handsome lad, maybe 20, and he looked hot in a Speedo. It was the second photo he saw that floored him. He knew these guys, and three of the six were his students at the dojo...all of them gay. The one standing beside Mr. Jack's boy was Neil, and if looks said anything, the boy and Neil were lovers. Sweet.

The rest of the house was huge, ten foot ceilings, five large bedrooms, and three more baths. The view from the living room was the peaceful serenity of the bamboo grove, the whole room done in a Japanese decor.

"Any first impressions?" Constance asked.

"They've done a tasteful job of decorating, the house is well laid out," Rosie said. "Do they have a cleaning service?"

"Yes, the house has a contract with a maid and a yard service, well bonded, very private. I don't imagine there would be a problem with continuing their services if you wish. And you, sir?"

"Natural protection on two sides, a neighbor on the other...the lot looks pretty secure, that was my only issue," Tim said.

"Oh...would this be a home for some celebrity?" Constance asked. "I don't really need to know, just being nosey."

Rosie smiled. "My nephew, Mark Harrison."

"Mark...the boy on that new television show? My daughters watch that religiously, he's got quite a following."

"Yes, and that's why we need a secure home for him," Tim said. "What are they asking?"

"Two point two at the moment. I don't know if Mr. Jack is fixed at that price, but they'll be back in a few days to begin packing. You have time to talk it over," Constance said.

"I don't think there's much to discuss, is there Tim?" Rosie asked.

"Not really, the price is fair considering the location. I imagine with a pair of binoculars we might even be able to see the studio from here."

Rosie smiled. "Can I leave you a deposit?"

"Wow," Constance said. "I need more clients like you."

Rosie left her a check and got a receipt, now all that had to happen was for Mr. Jack to accept. And four days later he did, Mark had a new home. It was his home Rosie told Brian, it was his money. But as a minor Rosie put herself and Brian down as co-owners pending Mark reaching the age of majority.

The second week of shooting they tackled the introduction of the new vice-principal. Once past Steve's fantasy scene, with lots of smoke effects and screaming kids filling the gym as the Emperor sentenced Puckett to death, they moved on to build up the VP's relationship with the students.

Vice-Principal Jones stands outside the boy's bathroom in the north hall as the class bell rings. She holds a sheaf of papers in one hand and looks at her watch. Then the bathroom door opens and a boy steps out.

"Late for class, detention," She says handing the boy a paper. The next...and the next get the same treatment, and then Steve walks out.

The setup for this moment was the earlier scene where Steve had been called into Puckett's office for fighting. In fact, Steve had been punched by Butch and was sporting a busted lip, but Puckett had to blame someone, the blood on Steve's collar did nothing to arouse his sympathy. And then Loretta Jones had walked in.

She ignored Puckett; there was an injured student at hand. So when Steve fainted at the sight of her cleavage she immediately went into action. Her empathy was with the boy and Puckett was too flabbergasted to take control. Steve awoke in the nurse's office with the new VP holding a moist compress to his lip. And their dialogue revealed that Steve reminded her of her little brother, he now had a strong ally.

But now here he was, late for class as usual and Loretta smiles at him.

"You're late for class, Steve."

"Yes, ma'am...I'm sorry."

"You'll never learn anything sitting in the boy's bathroom," Loretta says.

"I...I, well I saw Butch down the hall and ducked in there. I was afraid he would hit me again," Steve says.

Loretta frowns. "I need to teach that boy a lesson, why does he pick on you?"

Steve shrugs. "I'm on the basketball team and they won't let him play because he's in trouble all the time."

"So he's jealous, that's bad....we'll have to do something about that."

At this point Puckett walks out of the office and makes a beeline straight towards Steve.

"Late for class again..." Puckett begins to say.

"I'm handling this," Loretta says.

At this point the bathroom door opens once again and Adam comes out eating an apple.

"Hi," Adam says, and turns to walk up the hall.

"Aren't you going to give him a detention slip?" Puckett demands.

Loretta smiles. "Nope, that one is your problem, Steve is mine." And with that she places a hand on Steve's shoulder and they walk down the hall together.

Puckett growls and turns to chase Adam, but the boy makes a quick left turn and slides into his classroom. Puckett's body goes rigid and he clenches his fists. "Oh...that boy, I...I..." And then he stomps off while the camera zooms down the hall showing Adam leaning out the classroom door with a big grin on his face.

"Cut," Alan yelled. "Set up the bus."

"Ten minutes...ten minutes people," Tina yelled.

Steve and Mark walked back to the lobby where the prop girl handed over their backpacks. Brenda and Wayne met up in the hall and he gave her a hug.

"A good day, my dear...welcome to the club," Wayne said.

"I had fun...I love the kids," Brenda said. They both looked up the hall towards where Mark and Steve awaited their cues.

"Fine boys, so how are your children?" Wayne asked.

"Great kids too. They have so much patience with mommy away most of the day, but they're happy I have a part in the show. Kristin is six now, and she thinks Steve is dreamy." Wayne laughed along with her at the comment.

"Well I'm sure they'll be happy to see you on the show," Wayne said.

Tina came up the hall and smiled. "You two are done, go get some rest."

"Thank you, dear," Wayne said, and Tina hugged him before hurrying off.

"See, I like this job, I get to hug all the pretty girls," Wayne said.

Brenda laughed and gave Wayne another hug. "She's right, go home and rest. You have those big scenes coming up with your nemesis."

"Good night, dear," Wayne said.

Tina led the boys out to the front of the school where twenty other kids waited. They all clambered aboard old 249 and took their seats. Mark and Steve walked to the back and sat down, and then Mitch and Frank brought in the Steadicam with Alan right behind them. They did a sound check on the wireless microphones Mark and Steve wore, everything looked good.

The driver took 249 out of the school lot and up the residential street. "Okay, roll 'em," Alan said. Mitch slid the Steadicam down the aisle, slowly moving in on Mark and Steve as he passed the faces of the other kids. The bus bounced and jiggled, the subjects did too, but not the camera.

"I like her...I really, really like her," Steve says.

"She's too old for you, I don't think that's how it's supposed to work," Adam replies.

"Oh...no," Steve laughs. "I mean she's hot...beautiful, but I'm not in love with her or anything."

"So it's okay to have feelings for the vice-principal? You don't want to kiss her do you?"

"Kiss her? No way...well, it would be awesome, but only in my dreams."

"What's a dream like?"

"Dreams...whoa, you mean you've never had a dream?" Steve asks.

"No, I don't think so. I sleep without thinking," Adam says.

"Your mind must be so different, but I think you're missing out. In dreams you can be whoever you want to be and do anything you want...I might even dream about Miss Jones."

"My brain function won't allow dream thinking, it would interfere with the security needs of my body," Adam says.

"So you sleep but you're still awake?"

"A part of me is always alert. Remember, we have the Narts. Every child on Regalia learns that."

"It all sounds so strange and dangerous," Steve says.

"Not really, now here...girls are dangerous," Adam says. And they both start laughing.

"Cut," Alan said. "Let's head back to the barn."

"TGIF," Steve said.

"You got that right," Mark agreed. "So what's this cookout thing that Tim has planned tomorrow, what are we celebrating?"

"He won't tell me either...adults just have no respect."

"Hey, don't include me in that statement," Frank said from across the aisle. "You guys are my paycheck. I respect the hell out of you." The boys laughed as they pulled back onto the school lot.

Turn in the props, take off the clothes and sign out with Tina, Mark and Steve were outta there. Tommy rode shotgun while Brian and Tim sat in back with their partners.

"So what gives with all the hush-hush about tomorrow?" Mark asked. "What are we celebrating?"

Tim smiled. "Isherwood Day...you'll see. Just don't forget your bathing suit. I know Rosie loves you, but probably doesn't want to see all of you."

"Ha Ha," Mark said, and then he turned to Steve. "You're right, no respect."

"Steve, you're staying with me tonight, I talked to your mom," Tim said.

"Oh...and what are they doing?" Steve asked. "Ever since that cruse they've been all kinds of lovey dovey."

"Maybe they're working on a little brother for you?" Brian suggested.

"Oh God...I hope not," Steve said. "Mom is too old for that."

Brian and Tim laughed. "Don't let her hear you say that, she's my age," Tim said. And then he smiled at Steve. "You think I'm too old?"

Mark broke up laughing and finally managed to stop long enough to ask. "You need some help pulling that foot out of your mouth?" He then started laughing again.

Steve blushed and gave Tim a weak grin. "Sorry."

Tim smiled. "It's okay, baby. A woman is good to go having kids up until at least forty or so, I just don't think you want to share the space."

Steve nodded. "Yeah...I am not going to change diapers."

The limo dropped Brian and Mark off at Rosie's, and Tommy got out with them.

"See you in the morning, guys, ten o'clock sharp," Tim said.

Brian winked. "We'll be here." And the limo took off. Tommy opened the gate and looked across the street at the armed patrol guard in his Jeep. It made Tommy smile, that detail would soon be over.

Rosie had food out on the table, enough for an army, and then Brian remembered that she had invited Tommy to stay for dinner. Rosie liked the big guy, and he was unlike any black man she had ever met. The friendship started when she discovered that they both graduated from the same high school, just twenty years apart.

Tommy was the consummate gentleman around her, pulling her chair out when she sat, passing her things at the table so she wouldn't have to reach. He liked the little lady, and he admired what she had done for Mark. He was only surprised when he found out she supported Brian's relationship with the boy, but that was fine too.

Everyone there knew about what was happening tomorrow, only Mark was left out, he needed a good surprise. Brian felt that after such an emotionally draining month it would be best if they presented the new house like a gift. Mark's salary would pay the mortgage, but he would think of it as Rosie's home until...yeah there was that until to consider.

Her relationship with Todd was advancing, but neither of them was in a hurry to take a run at the finish line. He enjoyed wining and dining her, the expressions of affection had slowly crept into their conversation. They both knew where this was going...love was on the table between them.

The dinner went well and the conversations afterwards lasted until Mark yawned.

"It's your bed time I'm afraid, I need to go home too," Brian said. Tommy's car was out front, he offered to drop Brian off. Mark went around the room hugging and kissing, he was tired, and he knew Brian would be over early for their run. Brian escorted the boy back to his bedroom and gave him a proper good night kiss and then tucked him in.

Rosie smiled when he came back out. "Good night, gentlemen...see you tomorrow."

Brian hugged her, and so did Tommy. The big man was so gentle, it always impressed her how genuine his affections were. Gay men were just so nice to be around, she was just sorry that it had taken her so long to find that out. Brian was a fine man, Mark had chosen well. And she wasn't fooled, she could see the way Steve looked at Tim, there was something between them.

Gay boys were supposed to be fragile...at least that is what she had always believed. But as she watched Mark, and now Steve, come under the loving attentions of these two strong men that opinion was changed. Tim had told her of Jean's suspicions, and she knew he had avoided mentioning what he shared with the boy. That was fine, it was their business. She just didn't know what Jean would do when she found out.

Brian was back for the morning run and Mark looked wide awake and refreshed. They jogged in and around the neighborhood now, avoiding the main streets where Mark might be seen. There would soon be a new route, a new neighborhood. Brian had not been at all surprised when Rosie had told him they found a house. Tim had confirmed what a great deal it was. What had surprised Brian was Rosie's offer. She wanted him to take the apartment above the garage.

Living with Rosie and Mark seemed practical now, and the apartment was far removed from Rosie's bedroom. She knew they slept together, it wasn't a topic of discussion, but it was understood. The boy had come alive after partnering with Brian and she might as well concede that bringing him into the home was practical for them all.

The limo arrived just before ten and Mark was surprised to see Steve's parents in the car. It was a bit crowded inside but they managed to squeeze in. By now Steve knew what was up but Tim had sworn him to secrecy, it made for some rather random conversation on the trip.

Mark hardly paid attention to the ride, except for wondering why Tim had invited Steve's parents along. But he knew the man was close to Steve's mom, and this was supposed to be a gathering of friends. It wasn't until they swung up Mulholland that Mark realized they weren't going to Tim's house, but he still had no clue.

The limo pulled up at a large set of gates and Tommy was there to open them. The house looked pretty impressive and Mark wondered who lived there. They all got out of the car and walked through a gate and down to the back of the house. And that's where Mark saw the sign.

Hung across the gazebo spanning the pool was a banner, and it simply said "Welcome Home Mark." He turned from looking at the sign to see Rosie and Brian smiling at him as the others left them alone for the personal moment.

"What's all this?" Mark asked.

"Our new home...we bought it just for you," Rosie said.

"Oh wow...you mean we live here now?" Mark asked.

"Yes, baby," Brian said. "I'm going to live here too."

Mark had a choice, and he threw his arms around Rosie first and kissed her, then it was Brian's turn. "How...oh wow...how did you do all this?"

Brian smiled and laid an arm across Rosie's shoulders. "We're sneaky," He said.

It was best if they got the tour over early, so Tim led the way as Rosie told of how they had discovered the place. The sunroom was still the same, flowers and waterfall all intact. The basement was empty as was most of the house, today would have to be pretty much an outdoor affair. And after the tour they all walked back to the patio where Luigi and another waiter from Tim's club were waiting to serve the tables.

It was just before noon when some of the cast members began to appear. Wayne and Casey came together, Rick and Vera with their respective spouses. Brenda brought her husband and two kids, and then the yard turned into a happy place. Beverly and her folks arrived at the same time as Alan and his family; his two boys were about Mark's age, the daughter a few years younger. And then Manuel, Vince and Terry arrived to do the cooking.

The mix of gay and straight wasn't noticeable. It wasn't why they were here. In all just having twenty-five people in the yard made it seem like a home. The kids splashing in the shallow end of the pool nearby, the adults sitting and talking on the deck and under the gazebo. Mark was overwhelmed with joy at this gathering of friends. All the hard work of the show had forged a bond with these people, they were his friends.

Rosie and Brian sat enjoying the view of Mark playing with the kids until he saw them watching and ran over. "So did we choose a nice house?" Rosie asked.

"Awesome," Mark grinned.

Rosie smiled. "This is your house, Mark...or it will be when you reach your majority. For now Brian and I are co-owners, holding it in trust for you. You've paid for all this."

Mark looked shocked. "I have? This must have been way expensive."

"It is," Brian said, and then he laughed. "It might take you all year to pay it off."

"You spent all my money?" Mark laughed.

Rosie smiled. "No, dear...like everyone else we have a mortgage, and it will be paid off in time. But I can see this property gaining in value too, especially with a famous star living here."

Mark giggled. "Yeah, I am that."

"Tim says it will be easier to secure, the situation at the old house was just getting out of hand," Brian said.

"Are we still going to run?" Mark asked.

"Oh yeah, only now we have some hills to make it exciting," Brian said.

Mark groaned and looked at Rosie. "He's crazy, you know. Only Brian would think running uphill is exciting. So when do we move in?"

"The movers will be over Monday morning, you guys first and then me," Brian said. "Oh, and Rosie, I want to introduce you to Brenda's husband, he runs a furniture gallery."

"Yes...we definitely don't have enough furniture to fill all these rooms," Rosie said.

"My house...our house," Mark said, looking all around. "I never thought it would come to this. I love you both and this is the best present I ever got." And then he blushed, and Brian knew why.

"It's okay, I understand what you mean," Brian said.

Mark reached under his shirt and lifted the chain off from around his neck. He opened the clasp and slid the ring off, placing it on his ring finger. He handed Brian the chain with a smile.

"I will never forget what this means," Mark said.

Brian smiled. "And neither will I."

The smell of steaks and shrimp on the grill soon made them all hungry. Mark made his rounds, ever the good host, and the politician. Brenda's kids hung on him and Steve, Alan's were in awe of these young stars in their midst. Steve had almost as many fans as Mark did, and there was no better proof of their popularity than what Alan saw today.

He laughed inside because like a fool he had almost turned down the job at the very beginning. Talk about a career ending move...that would have been a disaster. But he had known many great actors in his time, but none as genuine as this boy...these boys. He had known from the start that there was something between Brian and Mark. He'd hired Brian to keep it all close together.

The man was good, for the boy and the production. If Mark wanted an older man in his life so be it, 'everybody needed something' had been his motto for years. He'd seen it all, and poor Michael...what a waste. If Brian could keep Mark together then he was worth every penny, nothing slid past that man...nothing ever would.

But when he realized that Tim Real was also into something with Steve he had been shocked. They were very careful, he could see that, but experience told him something was up. He was a director, a damn good one, and that meant he was paid for what he could see. And what he saw was a sixteen year old boy in love with an older man, one almost old enough to be his father.

Tim was the producer's son, and that was a ball buster. No matter how it panned out Alan sincerely hoped that Lee Real didn't find out any time soon. The man had a notorious temper, he was sure Tim was aware of that. No, that was like juggling dynamite...something best left to others.

But Tim had become cozy with Steve's parents, go figure. Alan had known other men and their boys on the set, there were some famous ones, and some of them were still around. Somehow Hollywood managed to keep its secrets while presenting another face to the public. It had always been that way. Rock Hudson was probably the most notorious, at least his boys were legal, but that had only come out after he came out. It had to make their lives crazy.

The food was laid out on a buffet line and the cooks were all applauded for their efforts. Tim had opened his personal wine cellar for the occasion, but he couldn't tell anyone. No one knew of his affiliation with Outrageous, most of these people didn't even know it existed, and that was a good thing.

By late afternoon the party was breaking up, and those with small children soon left. Brian took Mark into the house and up to his apartment. The walls were bare, and he told Mark about what Tim had seen in the photo that had hung on the wall.

"So you aren't the first gay man to live here, cool," Mark said as they stood in the empty bedroom. "Your bed will look real nice in here."

"It will look even better when you're in it," Brian said.

Mark held up his hand and admired the ring. "Our first house together, that's so romantic."

They kissed and gazed out the window at the remaining people on the lawn. "The first of many parties I imagine," Brian said.

"Yeah," Mark said. "Maybe we can slide Rosie out of town one weekend and have a nice nakie party by the pool."

"Hmm, you just want to invite Terry and Vince over, don't you?"

"Oh hell yeah...Steve and I were talking about that earlier."

"So that's why he popped a boner and ran off into the house, you are pure evil," Brian laughed.

"He's fun to tease, but neither of those guys can hold a candle to my man...you are way hot, mister."

"Thank you for that, I think you're pretty special too."

"I wish we had a bed in here now, I'd show you just how special," Mark said.

"Oh we have all night for that, and we get to sleep in tomorrow. Todd and Rosie are going out tonight," Brian said.

Mark chuckled. "Is that happening or what? I wish they would just get on with it."

"I think they have, I bet we get to attend a wedding sometime soon."

"And then what? Will it just be you and me living here?"

"You think Rosie will allow that? I bet she asks us if Todd can move in here," Brian said.

"He has a perfectly good house of his own. This one's mine...ours."

"This is a pretty big house for just the two of us," Brian said. "Of course, we could ask Terry and Vince to move in."

"Oh yeah, that would be awesome," Mark said. "Um, I mean, they would make nice friends."

Brian laughed. "I know what you mean, silly boy."

"Keep that thought in mind, and let's go home...I need to get you in bed," Mark said.

"Now you're talkin."
